We have been quietly building Homecenter — a Mac-native smart home hub that talks to Home Assistant, gives the room a keyboard, and stays out of the way otherwise. This essay is the first of a few short notes about the design decisions behind it.
Why a Mac app
Smart home apps are usually 2 am tasks: lights are on, the kid is asleep, the voice assistant is asleep, the home is actively bad at what we need. A Mac app means keyboard, accuracy, and the small status-bar presence that stays out of the way during the day.
